Message from the President – July 2022

Greetings, FLAVA members!

I hope each of you are enjoying your summer break! It was so good to see so many of you at the VDOE workshops with Leslie Grahn in Richmond this past week. If you were not able to attend, be on the lookout for more opportunities to learn with Leslie during World Language Wednesdays this year!

A big thank you to everyone who attended SCOLT 2022 in Norfolk, VA! As a co-host of the conference, FLAVA received a portion of the conference profits. I am pleased to announce that FLAVA earned $14, 203.62 from the SCOLT 2022 Conference. Thank you again to each of you for attending this conference! Let’s hope that SCOLT will return to VA in the future.

It’s time to start thinking about FLAVA 2022! I am so excited to see each of you IN-PERSON at the DoubleTree Hotel in beautiful Williamsburg, VA from October 6-8, 2022. FLAVA 2022 will feature almost 200 sessions, an exhibit hall, and many social opportunities to reconnect with each other. This year I am so excited to welcome La Maestra Loca (Annabelle Williamson) as our Keynote Speaker. I had the honor and privilege to meet Annabelle at SCOLT 2019 when I served on the SCOLT Teacher of the Year Interview Panel. Annabelle is such an amazing educator, mentor, and human being. I know that Annabelle will help each one of us to recharge, reconnect and reflect.

Annabelle Williamson was christened “La Maestra Loca” by her students long ago, but what she is really crazy about is building a positive, inclusive, success-oriented language community where every student feels seen, heard, valued, and empowered. Annabelle’s love of students, people, languages, and of life is contagious, while her deep understanding of the nuts and bolts of teaching for communicative competence will leave you eager and inspired to return to your classrooms and start implementing all of her strategies for equitable engagement! She’s currently in her 11th year as an educator, teaching Spanish in New Orleans at Morris Jeff Community School. When she isn’t teaching, Annabelle leads professional development in her unique Professional Learning Community (PLC) where she supports teachers around the world while sharing resources in French, Spanish, and English. She’s dedicated to her “Familia Loca” where she provides WL Teachers a safe place to talk about the JOYS and frustrations they experience throughout the school year. Annabelle has presented Nationally and Internationally on Acquisition Driven Instruction and Proficiency Based Teaching. She is truly passionate about coaching and inspiring teachers! This Queen of Brain Breaks was Louisiana’s Foreign Language Teacher of the Year in 2018. Annabelle has her Masters in Education with an emphasis in linguistically and culturally diverse education.
