Fall Conference

2024 Fall Conference

Navigating a Changing World with Languages

WHEN: October 10-12, 2024

WHERE: Norfolk Waterside Marriott

The FLAVA Fall Conference is a prominent gathering that brings together educators for an enriching blend of workshops, sessions, and discussions that address the current trends and challenges in foreign language teaching. Each year, FLAVA gathers educators, administrators, and scholars of Virginia’s world language programs and supports their professional development needs and interests in teaching, technology, pedagogy, and learning. This annual event creates a space for pedagogical innovation, reflection, and forward-thinking strategies aimed at enriching the language learning experience for students. Our last Fall Conference featured over 160 engaging sessions and approximately 650 participants.

ABOUT OUR KEYNOTE

We are delighted to announce that our keynote address will be delivered by Dr. L.J. Randolph, Jr., a distinguished educator, linguist, abolitionist, and the current president of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Dr. Randolph, an assistant professor of World Language Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has dedicated over two decades to teaching and researching critical issues in language education, including Spanish for heritage and native speakers, justice-oriented pedagogies, and the centrality of Black and Indigenous perspectives. His keynote, “Language as Liberation,” promises to inspire and empower educators to transform language learning into an inclusive and transformative experience.
