President’s Message– February 2024

Dear FLAVA Members and Virginia World Language Educators,

I am delighted to share some exciting updates and reminders as we continue our journey to Engage, Empower, and Energize with FLAVA! Our upcoming conference, themed around these pillars, is set to inspire and invigorate you. Join us on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Washington & Lee University in beautiful Lexington, VA, for a day that promises to be filled with professional growth and community building. Register here to secure your spot and be part of this transformative experience.

We are pleased to announce that conference registration includes breakfast and lunch for those who register by April 8, 2024, thanks to the generous support of Vista Higher Learning. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to connect with colleagues and gain valuable insights.

For those interested in presenting at the conference, we invite you to submit your proposals by March 1 through our Conference Proposal Submission Link. Share your expertise and innovative ideas to inspire fellow educators and contribute to the vibrant exchange of knowledge at our conference.

Additionally, mark your calendars for the FLAVA Awards deadline on May 1, 2024. This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize outstanding contributions and achievements in the field of world language education.

I also want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all who took action by reaching out to the Senators on the Senate Education and Health committee. Your efforts were instrumental in the outcome of SB 139, which was “passed by indefinitely,” ensuring that it did not pass. Your advocacy for world language education is making a difference, and I encourage you to continue advocating as we strive to make a lasting impact right here in Virginia.

Don’t forget to sign up for our upcoming FLAVA workshop, “Reading is FUNdamental,” with Lynne Hedrick, on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at 5:00 PM via Zoom. Register here to explore why reading is essential in our world language classrooms and discover engaging strategies to make it fun for everyone.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication to advancing world language education. Together, we are building a brighter future, starting right here in Virginia.

Warm regards,
Eric Jaworski
FLAVA President
