November Presidential Message: A Time for Gratitude and Growth

Dear Members and Friends of FLAVA,

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I find myself reflecting on the incredible community we’ve built together—a community of educators, advocates, and lifelong learners united by our passion for world languages. I recently returned from the 2024 ACTFL Convention, and I was inspired by the familiar faces, meaningful connections, and transformative ideas shared there. It’s a reminder of the strength and resilience of our profession.

In that spirit of connection and growth, I have some exciting updates and reminders to share:

Spotlight on Excellence

I am thrilled to announce and congratulate our 2024 Best of FLAVA presenters, Amanda Morgan and Kelly Mades! Amanda’s engaging session, Juguemos! Let’s Play! Games in the World Language Classroom, and Kelly’s impactful presentation, Strategies to Keep Burnout Away, were selected as exemplary contributions to our profession.

These presentations showcase the creativity, dedication, and expertise that define FLAVA, and Amanda and Kelly will have the opportunity to represent us at regional conferences, sharing their knowledge with an even broader audience. We are so proud of their work and know they will continue to inspire educators across the field. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor!

Mentor Program Highlights

A heartfelt thanks to Shane Goodpasture, our dedicated Mentor Program Chair, for his incredible efforts in launching the FLAVA Mentor Program Monthly Newsletter. This thoughtful resource provides practical tips, encouragement, and inspiration for educators at every stage of their careers.

The November edition is especially timely, offering strategies for navigating the holiday season, a focus on the power of professional conferences, and an invitation to connect with the mentor program. Be sure to check it out here.

Advocating for Languages

Languages matter. Now more than ever, we must make our voices heard. I encourage you to contact your legislators and share the value of world languages in education and beyond. To make it easy, Dr. Bettina Staudt has graciously provided a template here for you to use when reaching out.

I’d also like to take a moment to recognize Sharon Scinicariello, our Advocacy Chair, for her tireless work in championing this cause. Sharon has been instrumental in organizing our efforts and ensuring that our message reaches key decision-makers.

Earlier this month, JNCL-NCLIS shared an important update on this effort, which you can revisit here. Let’s ensure that Virginia recognizes the essential role of languages in our schools, workplaces, and communities.

Celebrating Our Community’s Achievements
I’m pleased to share an inspiring article, “W&L Foreign Language Teaching Assistants Attend FLAVA Fall Conference,” written by Lily Caldwell. This piece highlights the experience of the Washington and Lee University Foreign Language Teaching Assistants who attended the FLAVA 2024 Fall Conference. It beautifully captures their opportunities for professional growth and connection with language educators. You can read the full article [here].

I’m also thrilled to share the article, “Dick Kuettner Honored with the Helen Warriner-Burke FLAVA Distinguished Service Award,” written by Brian Laubscher. This recognition celebrates Dr. Kuettner’s extraordinary contributions to language education and his impactful work with FLAVA. It’s a well-deserved honor for Dr. Kuettner. You can read the full article [here].

Spring 2025 Virtual Conference

It’s time to start thinking ahead! Our Spring 2025 Virtual Conference will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2025. We invite you to share your innovative ideas and insights by submitting session proposals.

This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase your expertise and contribute to a program that celebrates the dynamism and diversity of world language education. Submit your proposal by January 10, 2025, using this form. Together, let’s make this an inspiring event!

Celebrating Success

Finally, please join me in congratulating Stephanie Stockman, recently named the 2024 National World Language Supervisor of the Year! She is the current World Language supervisor in Henrico County. Stephanie’s outstanding leadership continues to elevate our profession and inspire educators everywhere.

As we close out this month, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for each of you. Your dedication to your students, your advocacy for languages, and your contributions to FLAVA make our organization what it is today.

From my family to yours, I wish you a joyous Thanksgiving filled with warmth, gratitude, and the company of loved ones. May this season bring you moments of peace and renewal.

With heartfelt appreciation,

Eric Jaworski
FLAVA President
