FLAVA President’s Message–June Dear FLAVA Members and Virginia World Language Educators, As we near the end of June, I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation for the overwhelming number of outstanding proposals we have received for the 2024 Fall FLAVA Conference. Your contributions and willingness to step up to support our field of education mean so much, especially during these times when supporting world language education and each other is paramount. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to advancing world language education. We are grateful for your proposals, and the conference team is diligently reviewing them. Please note that you will be notified of the status of your submission by July 15th. The winner of our free conference registration giveaway will be notified by July 1st. Thank you for your enthusiasm and commitment to contributing to the success of our conference and organization. I am delighted to share some exciting news for our community. On June 13, the House Appropriations Committee voted to restore full funding of $15 million to the World Language Advancement and Readiness Grants program (WLARP) for FY25. This program is vital for Virginia, funding innovative K-12 language programs, particularly in areas with a significant military presence. To ensure this funding remains in the FY25 federal budget, I urge you to contact your current congressional representative. Additionally, as candidates for the next Congress have now been selected, please take the opportunity during their campaigns to ask about their support for multilingual communication and world language—including English—education. Get ready to be inspired at the 2024 Fall FLAVA Conference! Join us at the beautiful Norfolk Waterside Marriott in Norfolk, VA, from October 10-12, 2024, for an unforgettable experience.
