FLAVA President’s Message – December 2022

Greetings, FLAVA members!

It is hard to believe that my first year as FLAVA President is almost over. This year has been such an exciting year for FLAVA as we partnered with SCOLT in the spring and then returned to Williamsburg for our annual Fall Conference where we all had a chance to recharge, reconnect, and reflect with our colleagues and our fabulous keynote speaker, Annabelle Williamson. Throughout the year, we engaged in numerous engaging professional development workshops that our wonderful Teacher Education and Professional Development Chair, Jen Carson, organized. This year FLAVA worked hard to increase our presence on social media (Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter) thanks to our amazing Communications Coordinator, Morgan Bennett. We also celebrated the outstanding achievements of our colleagues and friends of FLAVA at our Fall conference – now is the perfect time to start thinking of deserving colleagues or language supporters to nominate for a FLAVA award. FLAVA continued to be well represented at NECTFL, SCOLT, and ACTFL with FLAVA members actively participating and presenting at our regional and national conferences. As your President, I am so proud of our organization and all that each of you do to support World Languages in Virginia and beyond.

It’s now time for YOUR help! It’s time to…

  1. Register for our FLAVA Workshop series. The next workshop is Thursday, January 12th from 4:30-5:30pm with Dr. Dali Tan, 2021 FLAVA Teacher of the Year. Learn about the workshops and register here.

  2. Consider attending NECTFL 2023 in New York City. There are several scholarships available. More details are available here.

  3. Consider attending SCOLT 2023 in Mobile, Alabama. There are several scholarships available. More details are available here.

Wishing each of you a blessed holiday season with your loved ones. May the new year be filled with peace, love, joy, and good health. Thank you again for all your love and support this year and I look forward to continuing to lead FLAVA in 2023!

With much appreciation,

Heidi Trude

President, Foreign Language Association of Virginia
