The Foreign Language Association of Virginia (FLAVA) holds steadfast to the Declaration of Independence ratified in July 1776, whereby all are created equal and have, as endowed by their Creator, certain unalienable rights including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Recently a man’s life was taken and his liberty and happiness were cut short for what is considered by many to be an act of racism and intolerance. Be assured that FLAVA stands firm in placing no person above another and recognizes all people for their qualities and contributions to society. Hateful and harmful acts initiated and inflicted by others is in no way part of FLAVA’s decorum. All people, representing cultures and languages around the world, should be allowed to pursue their life with happiness. As well, these same are to be permitted to assemble peaceably to air their grievances, as a constitutional First Amendment right.
