Message from the President – August 2023

Greetings, FLAVA Members!

It’s hard to believe that summer break is winding down and soon we will be returning to school. I hope each of you has taken time to rest and recharge this summer and are ready to start the 2023 – 2024 school year with renewed energy and enthusiasm!

Thank you to those members who submitted nominations for the positions of FLAVA President Elect and Communications Coordinator. We appreciate your willingness to serve FLAVA. In the coming weeks, the candidate platforms will be shared with the membership prior to voting at the Fall Conference. A big thank you to Thomas Sones, our FLAVA Nominations Chair, for coordinating this process!

It’s time to start thinking about FLAVA 2023! I am so excited to see each of you at our new venue, the Norfolk Waterside Marriott in Norfolk, VA. FLAVA 2023 will feature almost 200 sessions, an exhibit hall, and many social opportunities to reconnect and collaborate with each other. This year I am so excited to welcome Ben Tinsley as our Keynote Speaker. I had the honor and privilege to meet Ben through my PLC and at ACTFL this past November. Ben is such an amazing educator, mentor, and human being. I know that Ben will bring us many ways that we can both adapt and empower our teaching practices to meet the needs of today’s learners.

It’s now time for YOUR help! It’s time to…

  1. Register for FLAVA 2023 by September 15 (early bird deadline) :

  1. Reserve your hotel room for FLAVA 2023 by September 20th:

  1. Register for the 2023 FLAVA Summer/Fall Learning Series. Check out this document for more details about these amazing FREE online workshops.

If there is anything FLAVA can do to support you or your students, please do not hesitate to reach out at any time. I truly appreciate each of you and all that you do for World Languages in VA and beyond! Enjoy the rest of your summer and I look forward to seeing each of you at FLAVA 2023 in October!

With much appreciation,

Heidi Trude
