06 Nov President’s Message – November
It is November, the month of special Thanksgiving for our many blessings. I am so thankful for the Foreign Language Association of Virginia and what it does on a daily basis to support all languages in our Commonwealth.
I would like to remind you of a few opportunities and deadlines:
The Spanish Embassy scholarship deadline of November 18th is fast approaching. If you are interested in applying for a possible three week summer study program, please use this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/

Dr. Bettina Staudt and Karin Woodrum would like to seek your input regarding the 2020 FLAVA Fall Conference in order to better serve our members. Please fill out the following 8 question survey by November 19th so that they can begin working through the valuable feedback received. Please access the survey here: https://goo.gl/forms/
Please consider putting in a proposal for the 2019 Spring Conference to be held at W&L on Saturday, April 13th. To share one’s expertise in an area is the best way to give to other language teachers! Here is the link for proposals: https://flavaweb.
Our historian, Shirley Hall, is working on a conference photo video, and our membership chair, Andrea Machesney, is busy trying to consolidate membership lists to obtain a more accurate email list.
A number of FLAVA members will be attending the ACTFL conference in New Orleans next week. I want to take this opportunity to wish our own Heidi Trude, SCOLT’s Teacher of the Year, the best of luck as she vies for ACTFL TOY.
Grateful for each of you and your many talents,
President, Foreign Language Association of Virginia
