President’s Message August 2018

President’s Message August 2018

Dear Colleagues,

I hope that all of you have enjoyed these summer days and are beginning to think about your new school year. With that in mind, I would love for you to take the time to reflect on the importance of FLAVA and how you can support this organization. Here are some things to consider.

  1. Attend the FLAVA Fall Conference (theme: Languages Enlighten the World) in Williamsburg from Oct. 4-6, 2018. If your district will not support your attendance during the school week, there is a Saturday only feature for this year.

           Why attend???

  • Approximately 200 innovative and creative sessions from which to choose; click here for a tentative schedule
  • Thursday and Friday lunches are included if you register by September 16th

  • Fun evening activities such as a coffee and dessert reception, talent show, karaoke, etc.

  • Recognition of award winners and brief remarks by Yo Azama, the 2012 ACTFL Teacher of the Year

  • Exhibitors and vendors whose materials will enhance your classroom

  2. Do you have any old programs, photos, and other documents that our historian can scan and return to you? If so, please contact Shirley Hallat shirley.hall@vbschools.com.

  3. Sonia Brandon, Spanish and French teacher at Fork Union Military Academy, enjoyed her time studying in Alcala, Spain because of FLAVA’s nomination for a Spanish Embassy scholarship.

  4. JoAna Smith, our conference chair, represented FLAVA at the Leadership Initiative for Language Learning (LILL) in Texas in June.

  5. Dick Kuettner, our past president, is a nominee for a position on the Board of Directors for ACTFL.

  6. Heidi Trude, our secretary/communications chair and SCOLT TOY, will be vying for ACTFL Teacher of the Year this November in New Orleans.

  7. There will be a separate email after our fall conference about ways you can help represent FLAVA as one of the local hosts for the 2019 ACTFL Conference in D.C. Stay tuned!

Wishing each of you the best as you head back to school and remember, “Teaching that impacts is not head to head, but heart to heart.” (Howard G. Hendricks)

Best,
Sue
