Description:

In the first hour, participants receive copies of the teacher guide used by the joint pilot program of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Kentucky. Helen Small (Virginia Department of Education) and Patricia Cummins (Virginia Commonwealth University) present an historical overview of LINGUAFOLIO and the Virginia experience within a national context and go over the process that they are using for K-16 language portfolios. They will also talk about benefits to students and the uses of portfolios that have been seen in Europe and in the pilot experiments.

In the second hour, secondary and college-level participants will be divided into two groups. Secondary participants will be asked to consider their own SOLs and what adaptations might be needed to the teacher guide used by the five pilot states. College participants will be asked to consider their own outcomes assessment for majors and / or for general education in language disciplines.

In the third hour participants spend about 30 minutes in starting their own linguafolio as a model for their classroom. The final 30 minutes will be used to consider how to integrate language portfolios into individual classes.
